On the Way Home

It is late afternoon on the shores of Lake Malawi in Chitimba when Costas Mhango and her daughter Unice Nyirenda cross my path. Unice stays close to her mother, her mother’s shoes in her hand. They move silently across the sand, their pace leisurely.

Costas carries a heavy bunch of bananas in her hand and another on her head. They are on their way home, the horizon behind them, the sun slowly setting. Just a little way to go before they are home.
